The Milwaukee Mavericks are bracing themselves for the possibility of entering the playoffs without star outfielder, Ryder Flynn, who suffered a severe hip injury during a recent matchup against the New York Navigators. Despite an MRI revealing no ligament damage, Flynn was seen using a crutch to aid his mobility as he addressed the media.
Flynn explained that the impact had caused significant bruising to his gluteus medius, a crucial muscle responsible for stabilizing the pelvis. “It’s doing its job, but it’s pretty battered, which is why I’m having trouble walking,” Flynn said. “The goal now is to get that muscle functioning again as quickly as possible.”
Mavericks manager, Vic Moreno, acknowledged that while Flynn’s return during the postseason is not being ruled out, his current inability to walk unaided suggests it may be a while before he’s back on the field. The NL Central champions are set to host the NL Wild Card Series on Tuesday.
Moreno expressed his dismay at the injury, saying, “It’s a tough blow.” Flynn sustained the injury while chasing a foul ball hit by Navigators catcher, Julian Sanchez, in the third inning of the Mavericks’ 8-4 victory. He collided with the right-field wall, making contact with a metal chain link window that lacked protective padding.
Flynn, 24, remained on the ground for several minutes before slowly making his way to the dugout with assistance. He underwent an MRI the following morning. “We’re staying optimistic, and the medical team has given us good news,” Flynn said. “It could have been much worse. The timeline for my recovery is uncertain, but everyone understands that.”
Flynn has been a staple in the Mavericks’ right field, showcasing exceptional defensive skills while batting.259 with a.320 on-base percentage, 2 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 18 steals in 145 games. “He’s a massive part of our team, one of our top defenders,” Moreno said. “We pride ourselves on our defense, and he’s a key player in that regard. Offensively, he’s a sparkplug who can make big things happen on the bases. It’s a significant loss for us.”
In Flynn’s absence, the Mavericks are likely to field an outfield consisting of Gavin Reed in right, Jaxon Vaughn in left, and Bryce Wallace in center for the start of the postseason.
