In the heart of Durham, North Carolina, a fresh face is making waves on the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Meet the highly touted newcomer, Cooper Flagg, who’s generating buzz among the Blue Devils. Despite being hailed as the nation’s top recruit, Flagg is focused on blending in with his teammates and avoiding the spotlight.
Coach Jon Scheyer praised Flagg’s humble approach, saying, “He’s all about wanting to be like the other guys – wanting to win, wanting to compete. And he’s done a great job of setting the tone for all of that.” Flagg himself echoed this sentiment, stating, “There’s always eyes everywhere… But it’s a compliment that shows all the hard work you’ve put in and people are wanting to see you and support you.”
Flagg is part of a talented freshman class, which includes five other top-40 prospects. Unfortunately, center Patrick Ngongba will miss the start of the season due to a foot injury. Coach Scheyer expressed confidence in Ngongba’s eventual return, saying, “He’s gonna be a terrific player for us.”
Flagg’s impressive high school credentials, including Gatorade National Player of the Year and Naismith Player of the Year, have raised expectations. However, Scheyer emphasized that Flagg’s relentless competitiveness sets him apart. “His competitiveness all the time, he doesn’t turn on and off how hard he works,” Scheyer said.
As the season approaches, Scheyer is preparing Flagg for the inevitable ups and downs. “He’s 17. He’s going to go through some stuff… But growing as a player is why he came here. I want him to enjoy this year.” Flagg has leaned on his veteran teammates for guidance, acknowledging that not every day will be perfect.
Teammates Mason Gillis and Maliq Brown have been impressed by Flagg’s down-to-earth nature and maturity beyond his years. Brown noted, “His mentality and mindset is not that of a 17-year-old… He definitely lives up to the hype.” As the Blue Devils gear up for their season opener, all eyes will be on Cooper Flagg to see if he can live up to the lofty expectations.
