In the midst of conference realignment chaos, Northern Illinois University has issued a statement addressing speculation surrounding its potential move to a new athletic conference. While the university acknowledges the interest in its esteemed program, it clarifies that no formal offer has been extended to consider a change.
The Mid-American Conference, of which Northern Illinois is a member, has been the subject of rumors suggesting that certain schools may be courted by the Mountain West Conference. This speculation arises from the Mountain West’s need to expand its membership to meet NCAA requirements, following the departure of five schools to the Pac-12.
The Mountain West Conference has confirmed that its remaining seven members – Air Force, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, Wyoming, and Hawai’i – have committed to staying within the conference. Meanwhile, schools like Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Colorado State are set to leave for the Pac-12 in 2026.
Northern Illinois University emphasizes its dedication to the success of its student-athletes and appreciates the recognition of its strong brand. However, the university remains committed to its current conference affiliation, pending any formal offers or discussions that may arise in the future.
