Denver, CO – In a thrilling matchup against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers’ star slugger, Shohei Ohtani, made history by hitting his 54th home run of the season, while also stealing his 57th base, surpassing Ichiro Suzuki’s record for most stolen bases in a single season by a Japanese-born player.
Ohtani’s impressive performance earned him a 4-for-5 night at the plate, including two singles, a double, and four RBIs, contributing to the Dodgers’ 11-4 victory. His recent hot streak has seen him collect 24 hits in his last 34 at-bats.
“Shohei put on an incredible show tonight,” praised Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “He’s making a strong case for the Triple Crown, leading the league in home runs and RBIs, and now he’s closing in on the batting title.”
Ohtani’s towering three-run blast in the sixth inning left the sellout crowd at Coors Field in awe, with Rockies manager Bud Black acknowledging his opponent’s impressive strength and talent. “He hits the ball extremely hard because he swings with power and has incredible physical ability. He’s a truly remarkable player.”
With 408 total bases this season, Ohtani now holds the second-highest total in franchise history, just shy of Babe Herman’s 1930 record. The Dodgers have enjoyed significant success when Ohtani goes yard, boasting a 38-12 record in such games.
Teammate Chris Taylor attested to Ohtani’s current form, saying, “He’s completely locked in right now. He’s feeling it, and we’re all just enjoying the ride as he finishes the season strong.”
In the second inning, Ohtani stole second base, wearing custom spikes featuring a picture of his dog, Decoy, to break Suzuki’s 2001 record. He has successfully stolen 34 consecutive bases without being caught, the second-longest streak in franchise history.
