A certain NFL owner’s existence is a peculiar one, to say the least. Despite his team’s lack of postseason success over the past three decades, he continues to command attention. Recently, he made headlines by claiming that financial constraints prevented him from signing a particular player, who has since dominated his team with an impressive 174 combined yards. This excuse sparked outrage, especially considering his team has nearly $24 million in cap room, good for seventh-most in the league.
The owner could have argued that the player wasn’t a good fit or that his skills have declined, but instead, he chose to cry poverty. This claim is dubious, to say the least. Perhaps, however, there’s some truth to it. According to a former coach, the owner wanted to hire him to lead his defense, but ultimately opted for a cheaper alternative.
The coach, now an analyst, boasted that he could have fixed the team’s defense quickly, but the owner couldn’t afford his services. Instead, the team hired a different coach, whose previous stint as a head coach was marked by mediocrity. The results so far have been underwhelming, with the team’s defense ranking near the bottom of the league in several categories.
While the coach’s criticism may be tinged with bitterness, his words carry some weight. It’s hard to imagine that the owner’s first choice was the current coach, given his lackluster track record. The coach’s salary demands likely weren’t exorbitant, considering he’s been out of the game for several years. His desire to return to the sidelines and compete suggests that he would have been willing to work for a reasonable price.
The situation in Dallas appears toxic, with the owner’s penny-pinching ways contributing to the team’s struggles. As one wise character once said, “Some mistakes you never stop paying for.”
