LOS ANGELES — A nagging toe injury continues to sideline a veteran pitcher, leaving his team’s manager uncertain about his return to the mound. The 36-year-old southpaw, a three-time award winner, has been dealing with a bone spur in his left big toe since late August.
According to his manager, the pitcher’s progress has been stagnant, and there are currently no plans for him to face live hitters. “It’s clear that he’s not making the strides we had hoped for,” the manager said prior to a crucial series against a division rival.
The pitcher, a 10-time All-Star, underwent offseason surgery to repair a shoulder issue and didn’t make his season debut until late July. In seven starts, he posted a 4.50 ERA and a 2-2 record before being placed on the injured list.
On Tuesday, the pitcher participated in a casual throwing session, but his manager acknowledged that something is hindering his ability to move forward. “We’re still waiting to see how he responds in the coming days,” the manager said.
The pitcher’s contract, signed in February, includes a player option for next season, which could increase in value based on his performance this year. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his return, the manager remains optimistic about the pitcher’s dedication to getting back on the field. “He’ll do everything in his power to be ready when we need him.”
