The University of Louisville’s football team has been dealt a significant blow with the loss of senior wide receiver Jadon Thompson, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury sustained during the team’s recent victory over Georgia Tech. Thompson, a key contributor to the Cardinals’ offense, had hauled in two touchdown passes in the season opener against Austin Peay and had accumulated 88 receiving yards on six catches before his injury.
Adding to the team’s concerns, star cornerback Quincy Riley’s status for Saturday’s matchup against Notre Dame is uncertain due to an ankle injury sustained during the same game. Riley, a stalwart in the Cardinals’ secondary, started all 13 games last season and had recorded two interceptions.
According to head coach Jeff Brohm, Riley’s chances of playing against Notre Dame are “50-50 at best,” citing the cornerback’s high ankle sprain. The team is also awaiting the return of Caullin Lacy, a talented receiver who broke his collarbone during a preseason scrimmage. Lacy, who led the Sun Belt in receiving yards last season, began practicing with the team last week but did not participate in the Georgia Tech game. Coach Brohm indicated that Lacy’s availability for the SMU game on October 5 would depend on his willingness to play, noting that he may not be 100% healthy.
In the meantime, Alabama transfer Ja’Corey Brooks and junior Chris Bell have stepped up to fill the void, combining for 464 receiving yards and four touchdowns in the team’s first three games. Coach Brohm emphasized the importance of these two players, stating that they “have to play well for us every week or we’re not going to be great in the passing game.”
