India Poised for Historic Chess Olympiad Gold Medal
The Indian men’s and women’s chess teams are on the verge of making history at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. With one round to go, the men’s team is in sole lead with 19 out of 20 points, while the women’s team is tied for first place with 17 points.
The men’s team secured an impressive win over the USA, with D Gukesh defeating Fabiano Caruana in a thrilling match. Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi also contributed to the team’s victory, which has put them in a strong position to win their first-ever gold medal at the Olympiad.
The women’s team, meanwhile, beat China 2.5-1.5, thanks to a stellar performance by Divya Deshmukh, who won her match against Ni Shiqun. R Vaishali and D Harika also played crucial roles in the team’s victory, which has set them up for a thrilling finale.
Mathematically, the Indian men are well-placed to win gold with a win in the final round, but a loss could lead to tiebreaks. The women’s team, on the other hand, needs to win against Azerbaijan and hope Kazakhstan loses to the USA to secure the top spot.
India’s consistent performance at the Olympiad is a testament to the country’s growing prowess in chess. From having four players among the eight challengers for the World Championship match earlier this year to being on the cusp of winning gold at the Olympiad, Indian chess has taken a significant leap forward.
The final round will be a nail-biting affair, with India’s players facing off against Slovenia and Azerbaijan respectively. With their sights set on gold, the Indian teams will be looking to bring home a historic victory.
