In a thrilling finish, Colorado pulled off a stunning 38-31 overtime victory against Baylor, thanks to a miraculous 43-yard Hail Mary touchdown catch by LaJohntay Wester as time expired in regulation. The Buffaloes’ quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, connected with Wester, who dodged two defenders and dove into the end zone, sending the crowd at Folsom Field into a frenzy.
The game plan was to use star player Travis Hunter as a decoy, drawing the attention of the Baylor defense, while Wester slipped behind them. Sanders rolled left, and with everyone converging on Hunter, he launched the ball to Wester, who made an incredible grab.
“I trusted God, and God answered the prayer,” Sanders said. “We put Travis backside, he’s going to get all the attention, and then LaJohntay’s just going to be there, outside, one-on-one.”
The Buffaloes overcame three deficits and a 100-yard kick return touchdown by Baylor to secure their first Big 12 win since rejoining the league. Coach Deion Sanders praised his team’s resilience, saying, “The young men were resilient. They never gave up.”
Shedeur Sanders finished with 341 passing yards and two touchdown throws, including the game-tying Hail Mary. He also led an overtime touchdown drive, culminating in Micah Welch’s second rushing score.
Hunter continued to make his case for the Heisman Trophy, hauling in 130 receiving yards on seven catches and making a crucial defensive play in overtime, knocking the ball loose from Baylor’s Dominic Richardson to seal the win.
The Colorado fans stormed the field, celebrating the dramatic victory, which was reminiscent of the team’s 3-0 start last season under Coach Deion Sanders. “We have a fan base that’s phenomenal,” Sanders said. “We have some young kids on this campus that love and breathe CU football, and I’m thankful.”
