BERLIN – In a thrilling finale, tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz clinched a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Taylor Fritz, propelling Team Europe to a dramatic 13-11 triumph over Team World in the prestigious Laver Cup.
The 21-year-old Spanish phenom, fresh from his French Open and Wimbledon wins, broke Fritz’s serve in the 11th game and served out the match, sparking jubilant celebrations among his teammates and captain Björn Borg.
Earlier, Team Europe staged a remarkable comeback after trailing 8-4 on points heading into the final day. Alcaraz and Casper Ruud ignited the turnaround with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) doubles victory over Americans Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.
Shelton briefly restored Team World’s advantage, outlasting Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (6), 7-5, 10-7. However, Frances Tiafoe faltered in his opportunity to seal the win, falling to Alexander Zverev 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5.
The stage was set for the decisive showdown between Alcaraz and Fritz, with the winner claiming three crucial points. In a nail-biting contest, Alcaraz’s experience and composure ultimately prevailed, securing the Laver Cup title for Team Europe.
