The WNBA: A Legacy of Exceptional Performances
Since its inception in 1997, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has showcased some of the most remarkable achievements in basketball history. One of the most impressive feats is the triple-double, where a player records double-digit totals in three of five statistical categories – assists, blocks, points, rebounds, and steals – in a single game.
Throughout the WNBA’s history, only a select group of players have accomplished this impressive milestone. Let’s take a closer look at the history of triple-doubles in the WNBA, including the players who have recorded the most.
There have been a total of 42 triple-doubles in WNBA history, with 36 occurring during the regular season and six in the postseason. The first player to achieve this feat was Sheryl Swoopes, who recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists for the Houston Comets in an 85-46 win over the Detroit Shock on July 27, 1999. Swoopes also holds the distinction of being the first player to record a triple-double in both the regular season and playoffs.
Rookies have also made their mark, with Caitlin Clark becoming the first to record a triple-double in 2024. Clark achieved this feat twice, finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists, and later with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Alyssa Thomas holds the record for the most triple-doubles in WNBA history, with an impressive 15 – 11 in the regular season and four in the playoffs. Thomas is the only player to have multiple triple-doubles in the postseason.
Eight players have recorded multiple triple-doubles in their careers, including Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu, Candace Parker, Clark, Chelsea Gray, Courtney Williams, Courtney Vandersloot, and Swoopes.
