Today may have marked a turning point in the tumultuous relationship between star wide receiver Davante Adams and the Oakland Raiders. Post-game comments from Antonio Pierce seemed to hint at a particular player, and it wouldn’t surprise me if that player wears the number 17 jersey.
The New York Jets, meanwhile, have made it clear they’re all-in on building a championship contender. The acquisition of Aaron Rodgers signals a commitment to winning, and adding a talent like Davante Adams would undoubtedly accelerate their progress. While they may not be a Super Bowl team just yet, they’re not far off, and a blockbuster trade like this could be the missing piece.
The chemistry between Rodgers and Adams is well-documented, and it’s easy to imagine them reconnecting on the field. So, what would it take to make this trade a reality? Given Adams’ substantial contract, the Raiders might be willing to part with him for a relatively modest return. This season, Adams’ cap hit is $25 million, which the Jets could absorb with their current $18 million in cap space. The bigger challenge comes next season, when Adams is due $44.5 million. However, the Jets have a whopping $87 million in cap space for 2024, the fourth-most in the league, giving them ample room to negotiate.
I have faith in the Jets’ general manager, who has made several shrewd moves in the past. While the intricacies of the salary cap are complex, it appears the Jets have the flexibility to make this trade happen. And it’s not just about this season – Adams remains an elite receiver, and with Rodgers likely to be around in 2025, the potential for long-term success is tantalizing.
Imagine an offense featuring Breece Hall and Braelon Allen at running back, Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Mike Williams at wide receiver, and Tyler Conklin at tight end, all led by Rodgers at quarterback. That’s a team capable of making a deep playoff run. In today’s NFL, where offense reigns supreme, the Jets would be well-positioned to make some serious noise.
