A Weekend of Hits and Misses at the Box Office
This past weekend, moviegoers were treated to a mixed bag of films, with some surprising standouts and others that fell flat. Among the notable releases, one film rose to the top as the best of the year so far.
Flight Risk: A Fun but Flawed Ride
Mark Wahlberg shines as a villain in this campy, silly movie that’s perfect for a guys’ night out. Despite a terrible script and lazy editing, the film manages to be entertaining, thanks in large part to Wahlberg’s charisma. Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery deliver expected performances, but it’s Wahlberg who steals the show. Just don’t expect a masterpiece – this one’s all about having a good time.
Presence: A Haunted House Movie Like No Other
Director Steven Soderbergh brings a fresh perspective to the haunted house genre with Presence, a film that tells the story from the ghost’s point of view. With a simple yet effective premise, Soderbergh crafts a movie that truly cares about its characters, making the audience invested in their fate. Long takes and solid performances from Chris Sullivan and Callina Liang make this 85-minute film a must-watch for fans of ghost stories.
Inheritance: A Gimmick That Falls Flat
Shot entirely on an iPhone, Inheritance tries to differentiate itself from other spy movies, but ultimately falls short. The script is boilerplate, and the plot points are predictable. Phoebe Dynevor’s face gets a lot of screen time, but even her charm can’t save this movie from its weaknesses. The iPhone gimmick only serves to highlight the film’s shortcomings.
Brave The Dark: An Uncomfortable Watch
This inspirational movie from Angel Studios tries to tug at the heartstrings, but ends up feeling creepy and uncomfortable. The story of a high school teacher taking in a student is riddled with inconsistencies and unrealistic scenarios. Jared Harris’ performance is odd, and the movie’s message is lost in its sloppy editing and lack of nuance.
The Verdict
Presence stands out as the clear winner of the weekend, with Flight Risk coming in second. Inheritance and Brave The Dark, unfortunately, fail to impress. Here’s the current ranking of 2025 movies:
- Presence
- The Damned
- One Of Them Days
- Flight Risk
- Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera
- Inheritance
- Brave The Dark
- Wolf Man
