The Thrill of the Big Screen: A Year of Cinematic Exploration
As the curtain closes on the Top 100 Movies of the 1990s, I’m excited to embark on a new adventure – watching every movie released in 2025 that hits over 1,000 screens. But what about those hidden gems that slip under the radar? That’s where The Damned comes in, a chilling thriller that only opened on 732 screens, yet left a lasting impression.
A Chilling Tale of Isolation
Set in a small Icelandic fishing village in the 1870s, The Damned tells the story of a young widow, played by Odessa Young, who takes charge of the local fishing operations. When a foreign boat sinks off the coast, the villagers are faced with a moral dilemma – do they risk their own scarce resources to help, or turn a blind eye? As the story unfolds, the lines between right and wrong begin to blur, and the villagers are plunged into a desperate fight for survival.
A Homage to the Classics
Fans of The Thing and Alien will feel right at home with The Damned‘s blend of tension, suspense, and eerie atmosphere. The film’s brisk 89-minute runtime is expertly paced, thanks in part to Young’s standout performance. Her character’s determination and resilience are inspiring, and she brings a depth to the role that elevates the entire movie.
Icelandic Landscapes Add to the Tension
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its use of location. Shot on location in Iceland, the stunning landscapes and harsh weather conditions add to the sense of isolation and vulnerability. Director and co-writer Thordur Parson deserves credit for braving the elements to bring this story to life.
A Promising Start to 2025
As the first movie of 2025 to catch my attention, The Damned sets the bar high. While it’s unlikely to stay in my top 10 by July, it’s a solid start to the year. Next week, Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera opens wide – will it be able to knock The Damned off its perch? Only time will tell. For now, I’m happy to give The Damned a well-deserved B-.
