Orioles Off-Season Overhaul: Checking Boxes and Building Momentum
The Baltimore Orioles entered the off-season with a clear to-do list, and they’ve wasted no time checking off two crucial boxes: a right-handed outfielder and a backup catcher. This weekend, they agreed to deals with Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sanchez, respectively, marking a solid start to their roster reshaping.
A Power-Hitting Outfielder
Tyler O’Neill, the 29-year-old slugger, is coming to Baltimore to do what he does best: hit bombs. With a.313/.430/.750 slash line and 16 home runs in 156 plate appearances against lefties, O’Neill is the perfect fit for the Orioles’ lineup. His 3-year, $49.5 million deal with an opt-out after one year is a steal, considering his potential impact.
O’Neill’s arrival likely signals the end of Anthony Santander’s time in Baltimore, as the outfield becomes increasingly crowded. However, the platoon of Heston Kjerstad and O’Neill should replicate Santander’s offense, and O’Neill’s power will be a welcome addition to the lineup.
A Veteran Backup Catcher
Gary Sanchez, the former Yankee, is joining the Orioles on a one-year, $8.5 million deal. While he’s not the same player he once was, Sanchez still packs a punch, hitting.220 with 11 home runs for the Brewers last year. Seven of those homers came off lefties, and his veteran presence will be invaluable to the young Orioles.
Sanchez replaces James McCann, who’s seeking a multi-year deal, and will back up Adley Rutschman. With top prospect Samuel Basallo on the horizon, the Orioles didn’t need to commit to McCann long-term. Sanchez’s playoff experience and power will be a nice addition to the team.
Still Work to Be Done
While the Orioles have made a solid start, there’s still much to be done. A stud pitcher remains a top priority, with Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Nathan Eovaldi all potential targets. The Winter Meetings are just around the corner, and the Orioles are poised to make more moves.
For now, fans can be optimistic about the O’Neill and Sanchez signings. These role-player moves may not be flashy, but they’re crucial to building a well-rounded roster. As the Orioles continue to shape their team, one thing is clear: they’re taking steps in the right direction.
