The Electric Ja Morant: A Shift in Priorities
Ja Morant is a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court. When he’s healthy and playing at his best, few players can match his explosive energy and jaw-dropping plays. As a point guard, he’s arguably the most electrifying in-game dunker in the league.
A Change of Heart
However, it seems those days of monster Ja Morant posters may be behind us. In a recent interview, Morant revealed that he’s no longer prioritizing dunking over people. “I’m not trying to dunk at all… Sometimes, I get knocked out the air and (a foul) don’t get called, and now I’m out longer than what I’m supposed to be.” This shift in focus is rooted in his concern for his long-term health and availability on the court.
The Price of Greatness
Morant’s injury history is well-documented, having never played more than 67 games in a season. The Grizzlies need him on the floor to be at their best, and if that means sacrificing some of those awe-inspiring dunks, so be it. This isn’t an isolated trend; other big-time poster dunkers like Anthony Edwards have also scaled back on their dunking attempts, opting to focus on other aspects of their game.
A Bittersweet Reality
As fans, it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment when we don’t get to see Morant’s signature posters. But the reality is that his body takes a beating every time he takes to the court. By prioritizing his health, Morant may be adding years to his career, and that’s something every basketball fan should be behind. It’s a trade-off we can live with: fewer highlight-reel dunks in exchange for a longer, healthier career.
The Future of Ja Morant
While we may not see as many of those breathtaking posters, Morant will still bring his unique brand of energy and excitement to the court. And who knows? We might still be treated to the occasional insane dunk. But for now, it’s transition plays and open-lane dunks that will have to suffice. As Morant enters the back half of his 20s, it’s clear that he’s thinking about his future and the toll his playing style takes on his body. And that’s a sacrifice we’re willing to make as fans.
