The Unsung Heroes of Hockey
Being a beer league hockey goalie is a tough, thankless job. It’s a role that requires dedication, hard work, and a willingness to put oneself in harm’s way. These brave individuals show up to games at ungodly hours, lugging around heavy pads and gear, only to stand in net and face a barrage of shots from opposing players.
The Importance of Goalies
Despite their crucial role in the game, beer league goalies often go unappreciated. They’re one of the two most vital players on the ice, yet their teammates frequently fail to provide adequate defense, leaving them to face wave after wave of attackers. It’s a never-ending battle, with 3v1 situations becoming the norm.
Playing for the Love of the Game
So, why do these goalies keep showing up week after week? The answer is simple: they play for the love of the game. It’s not about recognition or reward; it’s about the thrill of competition, the rush of adrenaline, and the sense of camaraderie with their teammates.
A Chance to Shine
Occasionally, these unsung heroes get a chance to experience the big leagues. Maybe they’ll suit up as an emergency backup goalie (EBUG) in an NHL game or participate in a practice session with a professional team like the San Jose Sharks. When this happens, it’s essential to give them the full experience. No coddling or kid-glove treatment; they want to face the real deal.
Giving Them the Full Experience
Imagine being a Sharks player in this situation. You can’t just go easy on the guy; that would defeat the purpose. Instead, you need to gradually introduce him to the intensity of an NHL practice. Start with some gentle shots, then gradually increase the pace and power. Let him feel the puck zip past his ear, let him experience the thrill of making a spectacular save. And, of course, let him take a few shots off his mask, just so he can remember the day with a few new dents.
No Mercy
Most importantly, don’t take it easy on him. Let him face the full fury of an NHL practice. If he can’t handle it, well, that’s okay. At least he’ll know where he stands. And who knows, maybe he’ll even gain a sense of closure, realizing that he may not have had what it takes to make it to the top level. Either way, it’s an experience he’ll never forget.
