The Milwaukee Bucks: A Season on the Brink
The Milwaukee Bucks are facing a daunting reality, and it has nothing to do with the recent rumors surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s potential trade demands. With a dismal 1-6 record and a -6.6 point differential, the Bucks are currently sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. While it’s still early in the NBA season, history suggests that digging themselves out of this hole will be a monumental task.
A Glimpse into the Past
Since 1970, only 12 teams have managed to make the playoffs after starting the season 1-6. The Bucks, unfortunately, have missed the playoffs all three times they’ve started with a similar record. As the season progresses, the likelihood of overcoming this slow start decreases significantly.
Comparing Fortunes
The Philadelphia 76ers, another struggling team, are expected to receive a boost with the return of their star players, including Paul George and Joel Embiid. In contrast, the Bucks are still waiting for Khris Middleton’s return, which seems distant given his current status. Gary Trent Jr., who was expected to fill the void, has underperformed so far, adding to the team’s woes.
A Glimmer of Hope?
As a believer in the uncanny parallels between NBA 2K Dynasty Modes and real-life basketball, I find solace in the fact that the Bucks did recover from a 1-8 start in my 2024-25 season simulation to finish as a 5th seed. While this may seem far-fetched, it’s worth holding onto any shred of optimism at this point.
The Bigger Picture
The Bucks’ predicament is further complicated by the fact that they don’t own their first-round pick this summer if it falls within the top four. As a result of the Jrue Holiday trade in 2021, they owe it to the New Orleans Pelicans. This means that tanking, a viable option for most teams in this situation, is not a viable strategy for the Bucks. They must find a way to turn their season around quickly to ensure Giannis stays put and to make the most of their roster construction.
A Season of Uncertainty
With pressure mounting and the team’s future uncertain, the Bucks are stuck between a rock and a hard place. While it’s unlikely they’ll remain the worst team in the Eastern Conference, their reliance on Khris Middleton’s return and Giannis’ injury status makes their season increasingly precarious. As the games continue to tick by, one thing is clear: the Bucks cannot afford to waste any more time.
