The Illusion of Greatness: Penn State’s Unimpressive Season
Despite their likely 11-1 record, Penn State doesn’t belong in the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions’ pattern of beating inferior teams and losing crucial games is a recipe for mediocrity, not excellence. It’s a formula that has fooled many, including myself, in the past. However, after their underwhelming performance against Ohio State, it’s clear that Penn State lacks the mettle to compete with the nation’s elite.
A Defensive Effort Wasted
Ohio State’s 20 points in Happy Valley should have been sufficient for Penn State to secure a victory. Instead, the Nittany Lions’ offense sputtered, failing to score a single touchdown. Three trips to the red zone, including two inside the 5-yard line, yielded a paltry three points. This lack of productivity is a hallmark of a team that simply isn’t good enough.
A Resume Lacking Substance
When the first College Football Playoff rankings are released, it will be interesting to see how Penn State is positioned. With Illinois likely to drop out of the Top 25, the Nittany Lions will finish the season without a ranked win. Their 11-1 record will be one of the most hollow in recent memory. While James Franklin and his team may still manage to sneak into the Playoff, it won’t be because they’ve earned it.
A Lack of Accountability
It’s likely that Penn State’s 11-1 record will make it difficult for the Playoff committee to exclude them. However, this would be a mistake. The Nittany Lions haven’t demonstrated the consistency or quality of play required to compete at the highest level. They’ve coasted through their schedule, taking advantage of weaker opponents, but faltering when faced with stiffer competition. It’s time to recognize Penn State for what they are: a team that’s more flash than substance.
