Save Halloween Magic: Bring Back the Thrill of Trick-or-Treating

The Lost Art of Trick-or-Treating

Halloween Magic Fades Away

As I walked with my daughter on Halloween night, I couldn’t help but notice a drastic change in the way kids trick-or-treat nowadays. Gone are the days of knocking on doors, ringing doorbells, and eagerly awaiting a treat. Instead, kids skip houses without a bowl of candy outside or someone sitting on the steps. What happened to the thrill of the hunt?

A Covid Consequence?

Was it the pandemic that led to this shift? Did people start leaving bowls out to avoid contact, and subsequently, kids stopped knocking on doors? Whatever the reason, it’s a shame to see this once-beloved tradition fade away.

The Drive-By Halloween Experience

Now, families set up shop in their driveways, complete with drinks, fire pits, and folding tables. While I appreciate the effort, it’s not the same as letting kids experience the traditional Halloween thrill. It’s become a drive-by affair, where kids rush from house to house without ever setting foot on a porch or ringing a doorbell.

A Call to Action: Let Them Knock!

I’m not asking for a complete overhaul, but a little effort from homeowners would go a long way. Invite the kids to knock on your door, let them experience the excitement of Halloween. It’s not about being lazy or avoiding contact; it’s about preserving a piece of childhood magic.

The Decline of Participating Homes

Another disturbing trend I noticed was the significant number of houses that didn’t participate in Halloween at all. What’s behind this Grinch-like behavior? Is it too much trouble to give a child a piece of candy? Get over yourselves, and let the kids enjoy the holiday!

A Plea for Tradition

Next year, I hope to see kids knocking on doors, ringing doorbells, and shouting “trick or treat!” Let’s put the excitement back into Halloween. Quit being selfish, and let the kids experience the real magic of this holiday. It’s time to get back to our roots and preserve the true spirit of Halloween.
