Commanders Cut Ties with Another First-Round Pick
The Washington Commanders have parted ways with defensive end Jamin Davis, marking the fifth time since 2019 that the team has let go of a first-round draft pick. Davis, selected 19th overall in 2021, started his career as a linebacker before transitioning to defensive end this offseason under new coach Dan Quinn.
A Pattern of Departures
Davis’s release follows a string of departures by recent first-round picks. In August, the Commanders traded receiver Jahan Dotson to Philadelphia. Last season, they traded ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat to San Francisco and Chicago, respectively. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins, drafted in 2019, was cut in 2020.
Davis’s Time with the Commanders
During his three seasons as a linebacker, Davis started 36 games, recording 7 sacks, 1 interception, and 2 forced fumbles. This season, he appeared in five games as a backup, playing 85 snaps and finishing with 12 tackles but no sacks.
Roster Moves
The Commanders recently activated defensive end Efe Obada, reducing the need to keep Davis as a backup. The team created a roster spot to activate linebacker Jordan Magee, who was placed on injured reserve. Additionally, practice squad corner Kevon Seymour was suspended six games without pay for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
A New Direction
With Davis’s departure, the Commanders continue to reshape their roster under Coach Quinn’s leadership. As the team moves forward, fans will be watching to see how these changes impact their performance on the field.
