In a shocking turn of events, former Manchester United forward Diego Forlán is trading in his cleats for a tennis racket. The 45-year-old Uruguayan football legend is set to make his professional tennis debut at the Uruguay Open next month.
A New Challenge Awaits
Forlán will partner with Argentinian Federico Coria, ranked 101 in the ATP singles, in the doubles competition. The tournament, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, will take place from November 11 to 17 in Montevideo, Uruguay. According to Uruguay Open tournament director Diego López, Forlán has been preparing for this moment for some time. “He has been training a lot in tennis, and I think he deserves this opportunity,” López said.
A Lifelong Passion Rekindled
Forlán’s love affair with tennis began at a young age. “My father played football, and after retiring at 41, he started playing tennis,” Forlán revealed. “I started playing tennis when I was two.” Although he dedicated himself to football, Forlán picked up tennis again in 2023. Now, he’s ready to take his passion to the professional level.
A Legendary Career
Before hanging up his football boots in August 2019, Forlán enjoyed a storied career with Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan. He won the Golden Ball award for the best player at the 2010 World Cup, where Uruguay reached the semifinals.
