A Show of Sportsmanship in Vienna
Alexander Zverev, the world’s No. 3-ranked tennis player, demonstrated a remarkable display of empathy and kindness towards his opponent, 18-year-old Joel Schwaerzler, after their match at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
A Dominant Performance
Zverev’s victory was decisive, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the young wild card. However, it was what happened after the match that caught everyone’s attention. As the two players met at the net, Zverev offered words of encouragement to Schwaerzler, who was playing in only his second ATP tour-level match.
Been There, Done That
Zverev, who has been in similar situations before, could relate to Schwaerzler’s experience. “Playing in front of a large crowd, against a top-ranked player, can be overwhelming,” Zverev said. He recalled his own experience as a 17-year-old, playing against David Ferrer in Hamburg, where he won only one game.
A Bright Future Ahead
Despite the loss, Zverev believes that Schwaerzler has a promising career ahead of him. “He’s a wonderful player, and I’m confident that he’ll do great things in the future,” Zverev said. With 60 wins this year, Zverev has equaled his season best from 2018.
Other Matches
In other matches, Italian players Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli emerged victorious, adding to the excitement of the tournament.
