Browns QB Deshaun Watson Out for Season with Ruptured Achilles

Browns’ Deshaun Watson Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s season has come to an abrupt end. An MRI revealed that Watson suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon during Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the Bengals.

A Non-Contact Injury with Severe Consequences

The injury occurred on a non-contact play when Watson’s leg appeared to get hyperextended as he tried to carry the ball. He immediately gave himself up and fell to the ground, clutching his leg in pain. A cart was brought onto the field, and Watson was carried off, surrounded by his teammates.

Frustration and Disappointment

Multiple players expressed frustration with fans who appeared to cheer after Watson’s injury. Defensive end Myles Garrett spoke out, saying, “We don’t boo guys that are injured on the field, especially when the cart comes out. We should be ashamed of ourselves as Browns and as fans to boo anyone and their downfall.”

A Challenging Road Ahead

The Browns will have to navigate the rest of the season without their starting quarterback. Second-year player Dorian Thompson-Robinson replaced Watson but suffered a finger injury in the fourth quarter. Jameis Winston, who was inactive as the emergency third quarterback, took over and threw a touchdown pass to David Njoku.

Watson’s History of Injuries

This is not the first time Watson has suffered a serious injury. He has a history of leg injuries, including a torn ACL in his left knee in college and a torn ACL in his right knee during his rookie year in the NFL. Last season, he missed eight games due to a displaced fracture in his right shoulder.

A Significant Financial Investment

The Browns traded three first-round picks and gave Watson a fully guaranteed $230 million contract to bring him to Cleveland before the 2022 season. Despite his struggles this season, Watson will still earn $46 million in each of the next two seasons, with a salary cap hit of $72.9 million for 2025.

Uncertainty at Quarterback

Coach Kevin Stefanski did not commit to a starting quarterback for next Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, saying he wanted to see the extent of Thompson-Robinson’s injury. The Browns will have to rely on their backup quarterbacks to lead the team for the remainder of the season.
