Chiefs’ Undefeated Streak a Testament to Team Effort
Patrick Mahomes’ uncharacteristic stats this season have raised eyebrows, but the Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated at 6-0 after beating the San Francisco 49ers 28-18. Mahomes, with two interceptions and no touchdowns in Sunday’s game, has eight picks and six TDs this season – a far cry from his usual MVP form.
A New Normal for the Chiefs?
Mahomes attributes the team’s success to their versatility and ability to play “team football.” It’s not just about him or the stats; it’s about working together to get the job done. “I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team,” he said. “It’s not just about me. It’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that.”
Defense and Special Teams Shine
The Chiefs’ defense intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy three times, while the punt return unit launched receiver Mecole Hardman 55 yards to set up a touchdown. The running game provided 184 yards, making it a well-rounded effort.
Mahomes Takes Responsibility
Despite feeling that his interceptions were unlucky, Mahomes acknowledges that he needs to clean up his game. “There’s too many interceptions that put our defense in bad spots,” he said. “In order for us to even take another step, it’s going to be about me taking care of the football, scoring those touchdowns in the red zone like we did today and then letting our defense really eat.”
Physical Play and a “Dad Bod”
The game featured some physical play, including a hit to Mahomes’ throat by defensive lineman Maliek Collins. Mahomes also lowered his shoulder into safety Malik Mustapha, knocking him down while scoring a touchdown. He joked that it was his “dad bod” doing the work, saying he wasn’t trying to seek out contact.
Moving Forward
As the Chiefs continue their undefeated streak, Mahomes is focused on improving his game and working with his team to achieve their goals. With a strong defense and special teams, the Chiefs are a force to be reckoned with – even if Mahomes’ stats aren’t what they used to be.
