Raiders Quarterback Aidan O’Connell Sidelined with Broken Thumb
The Las Vegas Raiders have been dealt a significant blow with quarterback Aidan O’Connell suffering a broken thumb in his throwing hand during Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. According to sources, O’Connell will undergo further tests on Monday to determine the extent of the injury and how long he will be sidelined.
Gardner Minshew Takes the Reins
With O’Connell out, Gardner Minshew has taken over as quarterback. Minshew, who was benched in favor of O’Connell just last week, has a tough task ahead of him. Despite being signed to a two-year contract with $15 million guaranteed, Minshew has struggled with consistency, throwing five interceptions in his previous games.
The Injury
O’Connell’s injury occurred in the first quarter when he hit his hand awkwardly on the outstretched hand of Rams safety Kam Curl while attempting a deep throw. The quarterback completed 6 of 10 passes for 52 yards before leaving the game. Notably, he was pressured on 50% of his dropbacks, highlighting the challenges faced by the Raiders’ offense.
Minshew’s Performance
In his first half as quarterback, Minshew completed 8 of 16 passes for 90 yards, but also threw an interception and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. His performance has raised concerns about the team’s ability to adapt to O’Connell’s absence.
Looking Ahead
As the Raiders await the results of O’Connell’s tests, they must prepare for the possibility of an extended absence. With no emergency third quarterback on the roster, the team is relying on Minshew to lead the offense. The coming days will be crucial in determining the Raiders’ chances of success without their starting quarterback.
