Rookie Quarterback Drake Maye Shines in London
The New England Patriots got off to a flying start in their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium, thanks in large part to the calm and collected play of rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
A Key Third-Down Conversion
On the Patriots’ first possession, Maye faced a crucial third-and-10 from the Jaguars’ 16-yard line. With running back JaMycal Hasty to his right, Maye coolly dropped back into the shotgun formation, surveying the field as the Jaguars simulated pressure. Defensive end Josh Hines-Allen dropped into coverage, while defensive backs Darnell Savage and Antonio Johnson rushed towards Maye.
Maye’s Poise Pays Off
Undaunted, Maye calmly dumped the ball off to Hasty on the right side, who then did the rest. The five-year veteran, who used to play for the Jaguars, initially ran up the sideline before cutting back inside at the 9-yard line and darting into the end zone. The Jaguars defenders were left grasping at air, unable to tackle Hasty as he scored the touchdown.
A Promising Start for Maye
Maye, making his second career NFL start, was 6-of-7 for 62 yards on the opening march. His performance was all the more impressive given the Jaguars’ blitzing tactics. Specifically against the blitz, Maye was 3-of-4 for 30 yards and the touchdown on the opening drive. This brings his total to three touchdown passes against the blitz in his young career.
A Glimpse of What’s to Come?
The Patriots’ first opening drive of the season to end with points on the scoreboard was a welcome sight for fans. With Maye at the helm, the team may have found a new spark to ignite their offense. As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how Maye continues to develop and respond to challenges like the one he faced in London.
