ECU Fires Coach Mike Houston: Pirates Seek New Leadership

Pirates Set Sail for New Horizons: East Carolina Fires Coach Mike Houston

In a move aimed at revitalizing the program, East Carolina University has parted ways with head coach Mike Houston, effective immediately. The decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 3-4 start to the season, including a 45-28 loss to Army on Saturday.

A Change in Leadership

Athletic director Jon Gilbert cited the need for a change to propel the program forward, emphasizing that high expectations remain unchanged. “We have a proud tradition of excellence, and we’re committed to restoring that level of success,” Gilbert said. Despite back-to-back bowl appearances in 2021-22, the Pirates have struggled, posting a 5-14 record since then.

A New Era Begins

Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell will take the reins as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. With five regular-season games remaining, Harrell’s primary focus will be guiding the team towards a postseason opportunity. “Our student-athletes deserve the best possible chance to succeed, and we’re confident that Blake will provide the necessary leadership,” Gilbert added.

A Premier Job Awaits

Gilbert expressed confidence in identifying the right leader for the program, highlighting East Carolina’s passionate fan base, generous support from Pirate Club donors, and top-notch facilities. “We’re committed to finding a coach who shares our vision for excellence and can lead our team to victory,” he said.

As the Pirates navigate this transition, one thing is clear: the future of East Carolina football is bright, and the search for a new leader is already underway.
