A New Era for Indiana Basketball
The writing is on the wall: Mike Woodson’s tenure as head coach of Indiana is coming to an end. It’s a decision that’s been a long time coming, much like a stubborn grandparent’s reluctant move to assisted living. Woodson’s playing days at Indiana were legendary, and he deserves credit for keeping TJD on board when he first took the helm. However, his ego and questionable treatment of people off the court have ultimately led to his downfall.
A Fresh Start
So, who should be the next coach of the Hoosiers? In an ideal world, Indiana would have never let go of Sampson, but that ship has sailed. Fortunately, Scott Dolson, the man who brought in Cignetti, will be making the coaching decision. Here’s hoping he’ll have a significant say in the matter, rather than leaving it up to Woodson’s inner circle.
Dream Candidates
Every Hoosier fan’s dream coach is undoubtedly Brad Stevens. Despite the astronomical expectations that come with the job, Stevens has a proven track record of success wherever he goes. It’s hard not to imagine him returning to his alma mater and becoming a legend. Another intriguing option is Chris Beard, a coach with a winning pedigree, despite his recent legal drama. Focusing solely on his basketball acumen, he’d be an excellent fit for Assembly Hall.
Other Contenders
Dusty May is another candidate with ties to IU, but his credentials are somewhat mixed. While he’s had success in the past, including a Final Four appearance, it’s hard to shake the feeling that there are better coaches out there. Michigan’s resurgence under his guidance is impressive, but it’s also a testament to the program’s natural talent and resources.
A Call to Realism
Indiana fans often get a bad rap for having unrealistic expectations, but the truth is, they just want to see good basketball and make the tournament. The current product on the court has been subpar for too long, with talented players being held back by poor coaching. A coach who understands X’s and O’s would be a welcome change. While a national title is the ultimate goal, rational fans would be happy with a consistent, well-coached team that showcases its players’ growth.
