Rediscovering the Dark Charm of Dexter
A few years ago, I embarked on a thrilling journey, binge-watching the entire ‘Dexter’ series in anticipation of its revival. Having never seen the show before, I was hooked from start to finish. The Trinity Killer storyline, featuring the exceptional John Lithgow, left me on the edge of my seat. Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of the titular character is undeniably one of the greatest TV performances of the 21st century.
A New Chapter Unfolds
The original series’ finale received widespread criticism, prompting a reboot, ‘Dexter: New Blood’, which offered a significant improvement. This new installment focuses on Dexter’s son, Harrison, and explores the complexities of their relationship. Clancy Brown shines as the main antagonist, while the young actor playing Harrison is perfectly cast. Although the ending felt rushed, it was a notable improvement over the original.
A Fresh Take on a Beloved Character
With the announcement of a prequel, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, I was initially skeptical. However, after six episodes, I’m pleased to report that it’s a worthy addition to the franchise. The show’s structure, characters, and conflicts are reminiscent of the original series, making it feel like a seamless continuation. Michael C. Hall’s narration is still captivating, and the new cast, including Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, brings a fresh energy to the show.
A Talented New Cast
The casting in ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ is impressive, with some actors eerily resembling their older counterparts. Patrick Gibson, in particular, shines as a young Dexter, capturing the character’s awkward humor and mannerisms without feeling like an impersonation. Alex Shimizu’s portrayal of a young Vince Masuka is also noteworthy, bringing much-needed comic relief to the show.
A Hidden Gem
Despite the lack of online buzz, I highly recommend ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ to fans of the original series. With two more ‘Dexter’ shows in production, it’s clear that there’s still an appetite for this dark and captivating world. Who knows? Maybe Michael C. Hall will continue to play Dexter Morgan in some form until he’s 90!
