Saturday Sports Scoop: Fun Facts & Surprising Stats

Welcome to Sports Saturday

Get ready to kick off your weekend with a dose of fun sports stats and takes!

A New Spin on Sports Stats

For those who’ve followed my weekly NFL Sad Stats blogs, you know I’ve been working hard to bring you a fresh take on sports data. This is my new spin-off, where I’ll blend original stats with entertaining insights, delivered right to your phone every Saturday morning.

The Data Dive Begins

I’ve been busy procuring sports data from various sources, including the NFL, NBA, and NCAA Men’s basketball. With over 113,000 games to dig through, I’m excited to share some fascinating finds. Next up, I’ll be tackling NHL and college football data. And, yes, MLB stats are on the horizon – wish me luck (and a bigger server)!

Tyrese Martin’s +/- Struggles

In the NBA, Tyrese Martin’s -56 +/- is making headlines. But did you know it’s not the worst in history? Manny Harris and Scoot Henderson have him beat. Check out the top-five worst +/- players in the league:

  • Scoot Henderson (-64)
  • Manny Harris (-62)
  • Tyrese Martin (-56)
  • Anfernee Simons (-53)
  • Austin Rivers (-52)

Peak Thibs and the Knicks

Four of the top-five players with the most total minutes played in the NBA are on the Knicks. Peak Thibs, indeed! Karl-Anthony Towns is close behind, but it’s clear the Knicks are giving it their all. Even if it means sneaking in some oxygen breaks on the sly.

Matt Stafford’s Cold Weather Conundrum

Lot of talk about Matt Stafford’s ability to play in the snow. But what do the numbers say? Take a look at his passing yards by temperature:

  • 31-degree windy game: 482 yards
  • Outdoor games in Detroit: no correlation between temperature and passing yards
  • LA games: no correlation either, despite the warmer climate

It seems Stafford can throw in cold weather just fine. But what about Lamar Jackson?

Lamar Jackson’s Temperature Troubles

There’s a clear correlation between temperature and Lamar Jackson’s performance. When it’s 50 degrees or colder, or 70 degrees and warmer, his numbers take a hit. Maybe it’s the face mask, or maybe it’s something else. One thing’s for sure – it’ll be interesting to see how he performs in the cold this weekend.

That’s all for this week’s Sports Saturday. Stay tuned for more fun stats and takes!
