A Plea to the Baseball Gods: Bring Pete Alonso to the Angels
As the baseball world waits with bated breath, I’m taking a bold stance: Pete Alonso needs to sign with the Los Angeles Angels, and fast. I know, I know – the risks of blogging about this are palpable. Just as I was putting my thoughts into words, AJ Minter inked a deal with the Mets, fueling rumors that they’re looking elsewhere. But I’m not buying it.
The Mets’ Financial Flexibility
Despite the recent signings of Jesse Winker and AJ Minter, the Mets’ 2025 payroll still has plenty of wiggle room. With a projected $38 million less than last year’s total, thanks to the departure of dead weight like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and James McCann, there’s ample space to accommodate Alonso’s hefty price tag.
A Lineup on the Brink of Greatness
The Mets were already a formidable force in the MLB, ranking 7th in runs scored last season without Juan Soto. With Soto on board, the potential for greatness is undeniable. Re-signing Alonso would be the icing on the cake, catapulting the Mets into elite offensive territory.
Frank the Tank’s Prophetic Words
Kudos to Frank The Tank for predicting Alonso’s weak market before the offseason. It’s baffling that teams like the Mariners, Pirates, and Tigers have sat idly by, while even the Yankees opted for a cheaper option in Paul Goldschmidt. Alonso’s impressive stats – 39 home runs per season since 2021 and six consecutive Top 5 NL homer finishes – make him a valuable asset for any team.
The Plan B Smokescreen
Andy Martino’s report of the Mets moving to a Plan B has sparked concern, but I’m not convinced. As a former Mets reporter turned SNY mouthpiece, Martino has a history of peddling the owners’ agenda. With the Wilpons still holding a 5% stake in the team, it’s possible that Martino is being used to negotiate through the media. Until the Mets make a significant move, like trading for Nolan Arenado or signing Alex Bregman, I’ll remain skeptical about Alonso’s departure.
The Baseball Gods’ Cruel Whim
If Alonso does sign with the Angels, it’ll be a cruel twist of fate for Mets fans. But until then, I’ll hold onto hope that the baseball gods will smile upon the Mets and bring Alonso back to Citi Field.
