Revolutionizing the NFL Schedule: A Recipe for Success
The NFL’s current 17-game schedule has become the new norm, but why stop there? With the league’s emphasis on generating revenue, it’s time to rethink the entire schedule. What if we took it up a notch and made every game count?
The Case for 20 Regular Season Games
Roger Goodell’s argument for keeping the schedule within a 20-week framework is logical, but why not make the most of it? By doing away with the preseason, we can create a more exciting and meaningful regular season. College football has successfully implemented this model, with the spring game serving as the only preseason matchup. Fans don’t seem to mind, and the NFL can follow suit.
Player Safety: A Convenient Excuse?
The concern for player safety is often cited as a reason to maintain the status quo. However, with the recent experiment of playing three games in 11 days, it’s clear that the NFL is willing to push the limits. Add to that the grueling schedule of Thursday Night Football, short weeks, and international games, and it’s evident that player safety takes a backseat to profits.
A Smart Approach to Scheduling
If we’re going to revamp the schedule, let’s do it intelligently. A second bye week for players might be a reasonable demand, but why not schedule the Super Bowl on the day before President’s Day? Many companies already observe this holiday, and it would be a savvy move to make it a universal day off. As for the Super Bowl itself, keeping it on Sunday is the way to go – it’s the traditional day for NFL games, and it feels right.
Balancing the Schedule: A Key to Success
One of the biggest issues with the current schedule is the uneven distribution of games. We often get loaded up with 1 pm games, followed by lackluster 4 pm matchups. It’s time to shake things up and create a more balanced schedule that keeps fans engaged throughout the day. With the NFL already holding a significant amount of power over our viewing habits, it’s the least they can do to give us a compelling product.
By making these changes, the NFL can create a more exciting, more meaningful, and more profitable regular season. And let’s be honest, we’ll still tune in – the NFL has a firm grip on our attention, and it’s time to give us a schedule that’s worthy of our devotion.
