Philly Pride vs. Philly Shame: When Fandom Goes Too Far

The Unapologetic Philly Fan: A Badge of Honor

Philadelphia fans have earned a reputation for being unapologetically passionate and sometimes, downright rowdy. We wear our “Philly scumbag” badge with pride, reminiscing about infamous moments like the 2017 NFC Championship Game against the Vikings. Who can forget the “Gooooo Birds” kid or the guy who ran into a subway pole? Even the kid who ate horse manure in the parking lot wasn’t entirely terrible. We’re a city that celebrates our rough-around-the-edges spirit.

The Fine Line Between Scumbag and Human Trash

However, there’s a distinction between being a lovable scumbag and a genuinely despicable human being. One can be endearingly rough, while the other contributes nothing to society. Unfortunately, a recent incident involving a so-called Eagles fan falls squarely into the latter category.

A Toxic Combination: Ignorance and Profanity

What’s particularly galling about this individual is not just his profanity-laced rant, but his complete lack of understanding about the game. He berated a woman for celebrating Josh Jacobs being stopped at the half-yard line, seemingly unaware that, for Eagles fans, getting stopped at the 1-yard line is just as good as scoring a touchdown. We’ve seen it time and again – the football field may as well be 99 yards long. Jacobs went on to score on the very next play, rendering the man’s initial complaint moot.

A Revocation of Fandom

This toxic combination of ignorance and profanity earns him a one-way ticket out of the Eagles fanbase. We don’t need fans who can’t appreciate the nuances of the game and resort to vile language. As a city, we pride ourselves on our passion and knowledge of football. This individual falls woefully short of those standards. It’s time to revoke his fandom and welcome those who truly embody the spirit of Philly sports.
