A Season of Ups and Downs: Evaluating Todd Bowles’ Performance
As the dust settles on the Buccaneers’ season, I’m still reeling from the defeat. After taking some time to process, getting roasted on The Shred Line, and watching the team’s press conferences, I’ve come to a realization: some fans are calling for Todd Bowles’ head, and I think that’s a hasty decision.
The Case for Liam Coen
One reason for this sentiment is the emergence of Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen as a hot head coaching candidate. Coen has done wonders for the running game, a long-standing weakness in the Bucs’ offense. However, it’s essential to remember that this was his first season calling plays, and it’s natural for some of the initial excitement to wear off. I believe Coen has a bright future ahead, but his ascension shouldn’t come at the expense of Bowles.
Todd Bowles: A Proven Track Record
Bowles has a proven track record of success, despite a rocky start in 2022. He was thrust into the head coaching role late in the process, dealing with the aftermath of Bruce Arians’ sudden departure. The following season was a struggle, but since then, Bowles has been fantastic. He navigated the team through Tom Brady’s retirement, $81.5 million in dead cap space, and still managed to win the division and make a playoff run.
Building Blocks for Success
This season, Bowles led the team to a 10-7 record, winning the division again. After a Week 11 bye, the Bucs held teams to 17.9 points per game in the final eight games. While the loss to Washington was disappointing, it’s unfair to pin it solely on Bowles. The team played hard for him, and he showed growth in clock management and aggressive calls.
A Coach Worth Keeping
Todd Bowles is more than just a good coach; he’s a leader who gets the best out of his players. He’s willing to learn and adapt, and his ability to develop young talent is impressive. The Bucs’ front office deserves credit for drafting well, but Bowles and his staff have done an excellent job of nurturing those players into key contributors. I’m a Todd Bowles fan, and I think you should be too.
