The Coaching Conundrum: Weighing Options and Opportunities
For many coaches, the ultimate goal is to become a head coach, leaving the coordinator role behind. While some seasoned veterans may be content with mentoring and enjoying their twilight years, younger coaches like Kliff Kingsbury often crave the top spot.
A Taste of Success, a Hunger for More
Kliff’s experience as a head coach has been a mixed bag. His lone winning season with the Cardinals in 2021 was followed by lackluster performances, ultimately leading to his firing. However, his recent success as the offensive coordinator in Washington, where he’s guided rookie QB Jayden to MVP-level play, has reignited his passion for the top job.
A Hot Commodity, But at What Cost?
With his youth, experience, and impressive track record, Kliff is poised to be a highly sought-after head coach. Yet, as enticing as the prospect of a new challenge may be, it’s essential to consider the current landscape. The available head coaching positions are far from ideal, with teams like the Bears, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, and Browns mired in turmoil.
The Grass Isn’t Always Greener
While a head coaching role might come with a bigger paycheck, the potential drawbacks are significant. Would Kliff truly want to navigate the chaos in Chicago or New York? The Raiders and Titans might be the most appealing options, but even they come with their own set of challenges.
Staying Put, Finishing the Job
In contrast, Kliff’s current situation in Washington offers a unique opportunity. He’s developing a generational talent in Jayden, has a Pro Bowl WR in Terry, and the team boasts a substantial amount of cap room for next season. Perhaps, instead of chasing a new challenge, Kliff should focus on finishing what he’s started in Washington.
One Exception, One Hope
The Bengals, often overlooked as a dysfunctional organization, might be an intriguing option. However, even with Joe Burrow’s exceptional talent, the team’s underlying issues would make it a tough sell. My hope is that Kliff will choose to stay in Washington for at least one more season, allowing him to build on his current success before exploring other opportunities. One more year of Kliff and Jayden together would be a dream come true.
