Perspective is Key: Celtics’ Big Win Over Timberwolves
When it comes to life and basketball, perspective is crucial. The Celtics’ December was one of the worst months in the Joe Mazzulla era, but an 8-6 record can be viewed as a success for some teams. However, for this team, it’s unacceptable. The Celtics ended 2024 with a 2-3 stretch, but they’ve technically won three of their last four games. It’s all about how you look at things.
Tatum Shines in Measuring Stick Game
The matchup against the Timberwolves was a measuring stick game, particularly between Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards. Tatum reminded everyone of his two-way superstar status, dominating on both ends of the floor while holding Edwards to just six points. He’s having one of the best isolation seasons in the NBA, ranking in the 94th percentile in iso offense. His ball security was also impressive, with only two turnovers.
Supporting Cast Steps Up
With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis out, the supporting cast had to elevate their game. Derrick White, in particular, stepped up, filling in the production gap with his efficient shooting and clutch gene. Jrue Holiday’s impact since returning from injury has been immense, providing efficient scoring, elite defense, and ball security. Sam Hauser also snapped out of his early-season funk, making crucial shots and providing a spark off the bench.
Defense and Ball Security Key to Success
The Celtics’ defense was solid, holding the Timberwolves to 16 points in the second quarter. They also took care of the ball, turning it over only four times against a defense that forces an average of 15 turnovers per game. This allowed them to absorb the hits and ultimately secure the win.
Room for Improvement
While the win was impressive, there are still areas for improvement. The Celtics were destroyed on the glass, and their three-point defense was lacking. They also struggled with fouls, with a 16-11 foul difference. Consistency from the officials is key, and it’s frustrating to see teams play by different rules.
Building Momentum
The Celtics need to build off this momentum and continue to play the right way for a full 48 minutes. If they can do that, the rest of this road trip will turn out just fine. But if they play poorly, things can go south quickly given the level of competition ahead.
