The Agony and the Ecstasy: A Browns Fan’s Lament
This season, the Cleveland Browns have left me feeling utterly bewildered and frustrated. As I reflect on the year that was, I’m reminded of the wise words of Ed Henry from Remember The Titans: “Well, that’s it, boys. Good season.” But if I’m being honest, I’d substitute “good” with “the most infuriating season of sports I’ve ever endured.”
A Season of Unfulfilled Promise
Coming into this year, I genuinely believed the Browns had the talent and depth to compete for a Super Bowl. We were building on an 11-6 playoff season with our backup QB, and the return of a player who I thought could recapture their 2020 form. Add to that the Defensive Player of the Year, the acquisition of Jerry Jeudy, and the eventual return of Nick Chubb. It seemed like a recipe for success. But here we are, with the worst record in the NFL.
Tank Mode Activated
Today’s game was a perfect encapsulation of our season. Starting Bailey Zappe against a team fighting for their division title was a clear indication that we were throwing in the towel. And what a fitting way to cap off this disastrous season – with a game-ending interception, down 25 points, in the red zone, to a 500-pound lineman.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
As I turn my attention to the future, I’ll be watching tomorrow’s games with bated breath, hoping that the Pats and/or Titans will stumble and allow us to climb higher in the draft. From there, I’ll devise a plan for the Browns’ front office, since I’ve lost faith in Andrew Berry’s decision-making abilities. The questions loom large: who will be our starting QB next year, who will we draft, and what will become of Myles Garrett?
A Plea to the Front Office
One thing is certain – I beg of you, Mr. Berry, please avoid drafting Mason Graham from Michigan. The thought of cheering for a player who hurled insults at Jack Sawyer is too much to bear. Consider Travis Hunter, Cam Ward, or Will Campbell instead. Trade the pick if you must, but spare us the agony of Mason Graham.
