The Patriots’ Forgotten Hero: Christian Gonzalez’s Snub
For over two decades, the New England Patriots have been synonymous with team success, often at the expense of individual recognition. However, with the team’s recent struggles, it’s become essential to acknowledge and celebrate personal achievements.
A Shift in Focus
In the past, the Patriots’ emphasis on team goals meant that individual accolades took a backseat. But with only seven wins in two seasons and nine losses in their last 40 games, it’s time to shift the focus to personal accomplishments. And one player who deserves recognition is Christian Gonzalez.
A Pro Bowl Snub
Gonzalez’s omission from the Pro Bowl roster is nothing short of a travesty. Despite an impressive second season, he didn’t even make NFL.com’s list of Top 10 Snubs. This oversight is a disservice to his hard work and dedication.
Gonzalez’s Impressive Stats
So, what did Gonzalez achieve in his second season? He:
- Gave up receptions at a rate of 54.8%, 9th lowest among all cornerbacks
- Allowed only two touchdowns
- Recorded two interceptions and broke up seven passes
- Earned a coverage grade of 78.2 from Pro Football Focus, 8th best among corners
- Added 56 tackles with a missed tackle rate of just 7.4%, 9th lowest among CBs
- Limited opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 70.5, 7th lowest at his position
Tough Assignments
Gonzalez consistently faced the toughest opponents, including:
- Ja’Marr Chase in Week 1: 3 targets, 3 receptions, 15 yards
- DK Metcalf in Week 2: 7 targets, 4 receptions, 26 yards
- Davante Adams in Week 8: 4 targets, 1 reception, 16 yards
- Cooper Kupp in Week 11: 4 targets, 2 receptions, 9 yards
- Marvin Harrison, Jr. in Week 15: 5 targets, 1 reception, 23 yards (a pick play on the second defensive snap)
A Badge of Honor
In the past, Patriots fans would have worn Gonzalez’s snub as a badge of honor, using it as fuel to drive the team forward. However, in the current state of the franchise, it’s just another disappointment to add to the list.
Hope for the Future
All we can do is hope that Gonzalez and future generations of Patriots will make someone pay for this insult. That day can’t come soon enough.
