The Unforgettable Journey of a Teacher-Turned-Coach
As I stand at the threshold of a new chapter in my life, I am overwhelmed with emotions. My teaching career, which spanned nearly a decade, has come to an end. The thought of leaving behind the 1,500 students I’ve taught, learned with, and shared countless memories with is daunting. But as I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the countless moments that made it all worthwhile.
A Dream Realized
Growing up, I had a clear vision of what I wanted to become – a teacher and a high school basketball coach. My role model was my 10th-grade Honors English teacher, who also happened to be my basketball coach. He instilled in me a sense of purpose and high standards, and I wanted to do the same for my students.
The Early Years
I remember my first day of school like it was yesterday. I was 22, sporting a questionable facial hair style, but determined to make a difference. I quickly became known as the fun teacher who would do anything to make learning enjoyable for my students. Who could forget the time I got taped to the wall or the epic Fortnite battle that earned me the title of “Mr. Loser”?
Making Memories
As I scroll through my camera roll, I’m reminded of the countless memories I’ve made with my students. From our annual March Madness brochures to our Pop-a-Shot Machine competitions, every moment was a chance to connect with my students and make learning fun. And who could forget our infamous “Guy Day Fridays,” where we’d kick back, eat pizza, and watch football?
The Covid Era
When Covid hit, teaching became a whole new ball game. I had to get creative, prerecording lessons in different themes to keep my students engaged. From Tiger King to outer space, I did it all. And when we finally returned to the classroom, I was blessed with an all-boys class, which became my favorite part of teaching.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
As I bid farewell to my teaching career, I’m filled with a mix of emotions. I’ll miss the silly antics, the laughter, and the memories we created together. But I’m also excited for the new chapter that lies ahead. I’m grateful to my Principal for allowing me to come back and teach one more day, and to my students for making it a day to remember.
A New Beginning
As I turn the page, I’m thrilled to start my new career with the best company in the world. I’m excited to focus on making people laugh and bringing new ideas to life. And who knows? Maybe I’ll even win that state championship in Granville High School Basketball history. The possibilities are endless, and I’m ready to take on the world.
