The Joy of Keeping Score
As I settle into my seat at a Major League Baseball game, scorebook in hand, I feel a sense of excitement and focus. This age-old tradition allows me to stay fully engaged throughout the game, and the end result is a treasured keepsake. You might be surprised to learn that this passion of mine often sparks good-natured teasing from my colleagues, Marty Mush and Hubbs. Perhaps they’re intimidated by someone who can read and write?
A Community of Scorekeepers
Despite the jokes, I’m not alone in my love for keeping score. Whenever I share my experience on social media, I’m flooded with responses from like-minded fans who share my enthusiasm. We bond over our shared passion, exchanging tips and recommendations for the best scorebooks.
My Go-To Scorebook
My scorebook of choice is “Bob Carpenter’s Baseball Scorebook.” As the play-by-play announcer for the Nationals, Carpenter has created a masterpiece. The laminated cover and clever layout make it perfect for rainy days and provide ample space for each team. I’m so fond of this book that I keep a spare on hand, just in case.
The Personal Touch
One of the things I love most about scoring is the personal touch it brings. Everyone develops their own unique style, making it a reflection of their individuality. I strive to write neatly (no easy feat, given my questionable handwriting skills), and while mistakes are inevitable, they’re mine alone to correct.
A Sense of Comfort
Holding my scorebook brings me a sense of comfort, reminiscent of sunny days at Citi Field. It’s a tangible connection to the game I love, providing a sense of inner peace. I’m willing to bet that fellow sports enthusiasts have their own special item that sparks a similar sense of joy and nostalgia.
Finding Solace in the Game
When I attend games, I prefer to sit high up, taking in the full perspective of the field. I also seek out less crowded areas, where I can find a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling city. On a recent Wednesday night game in July, I found myself in the 500’s section, surrounded by few fans, but plenty of peace.
The Anticipation Builds
As the new season approaches, I’m filled with excitement. The bracket is out, St. Patrick’s Day is behind us, and Opening Day is just around the corner. I’ll be back at Citi Field, scorebook in hand, ready to soak up every moment of the game. The long winter is finally over, and baseball is back.
