Superhero Showdown: When Trailers Go Wrong

The Unholy Union of Batman and Nickelback

A bizarre TV spot for “Batman Begins” has been making the rounds, leaving fans stunned and scratching their heads. The ad features Nickelback’s “Someday” as the soundtrack, which clashes with the dark tone of the movie in a way that’s almost laughable. It’s a jarring combination that’s hard to fathom, especially considering the Katie Holmes-Rachel Dawes quotes that make it seem like a romantic drama.

Tonal Whiplash

The ad’s creators seem to have missed the mark entirely, transforming the gritty “Batman Begins” into something that resembles an episode of “One Tree Hill.” It’s a far cry from the intense, brooding atmosphere that Christopher Nolan’s film is known for. While it’s not the worst offender, it’s still a cringe-worthy attempt at marketing a superhero movie.

The ABC Family Abomination

If you thought the Nickelback ad was bad, wait until you see the ABC Family TV spot for “Batman Begins.” The tagline “He fights for family, and lives for love” is a laughable misrepresentation of Bruce Wayne’s character. It’s a wonder that someone was tasked with creating a trailer that makes the movie look like an ABC Family Original, but they somehow managed to pull it off.

Superhero Trailers: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

As we await the new Superman teaser, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the most iconic superhero trailers. Take, for instance, the trailer for “The Dark Knight,” which still stands as one of the greatest of all time. On the other hand, “The Batman” trailer’s use of Nirvana was a bold move that paid off.

Zack Snyder’s Trailer Magic

Zack Snyder’s trailers often have a certain aura that’s hard to deny. The “WATCHMEN” trailer, set to Smashing Pumpkins, is a masterclass in building hype. While the movie itself was good, it couldn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the trailer. Similarly, the “Man of Steel” trailer was fantastic, even if it did get a bit confusing.

Marvel’s Missteps

On the Marvel side, the first “Age of Ultron” teaser promised a much darker movie than we ultimately got, setting expectations way too high. Meanwhile, the second trailer for “Captain America: Civil War” remains one of the best superhero trailers of all time, thanks to its introduction of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. What are your favorite superhero movie trailers?
