Florida’s Porn Ban: A Futile Effort?
As of January 1, Floridians will no longer have access to Pornhub, the world’s most popular pornography website. The decision comes in response to a new state law requiring porn sites to verify users’ ages by uploading a photo ID. Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, has confirmed that it will deny access to all users in the state, citing the law’s unrealistic demands.
A Familiar Pattern
This isn’t the first time Pornhub has taken a stand against age verification laws. Texas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Oklahoma have all been blocked by the site in recent months. It seems Pornhub is willing to sacrifice user access rather than comply with laws that could compromise user privacy.
The Futility of Age Verification
The idea behind the law is to prevent minors from accessing porn online. However, it’s unlikely to achieve its goal. With the rise of VPNs and other circumvention tools, determined individuals can easily bypass state-based restrictions. Moreover, forcing users to upload their IDs to porn sites may drive them to darker, unregulated corners of the internet, where safety and moderation are often neglected.
The Unintended Consequences
By trying to enforce age verification, Florida may inadvertently put parents’ home computers at risk. Horny teenagers will stop at nothing to access porn, even if it means exposing their families to malware and viruses. It’s a cat-and-mouse game, where the state is unlikely to emerge victorious.
A Call for a Better Solution
The standoff between Pornhub and Florida highlights the need for a more effective and privacy-friendly age verification system. Until then, it’s unclear how this impasse will be resolved. One thing is certain, though: attempting to block porn access will only drive users to more dangerous and unregulated platforms.
