Warm Weather Wisdom
When it comes to life advice, I’ve got one crucial tip for younger generations: attend a large university in a warm climate. It doesn’t matter where, just make sure it’s sunny and populous. If you’re hesitant due to distance or unfamiliarity, don’t be – it’ll be worth it.
A Decision That Changed Everything
For me, this epiphany came in 2005 when I chose to become a Sun Devil at Arizona State University. I was one of only two students from my graduating class to venture west of the Mississippi, drawn to the warm weather, massive student body, and relatively high acceptance rate. Nearly two decades later, I can confidently say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Sports Fandom and Memories
Part of the allure was ASU’s membership in the Pac-10 conference, which boasted powerhouse teams in various sports, especially football. I fondly recall watching legendary players like Reggie Bush, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Dennis Dixon dominate on the field. My first season in 2005 was marked by a thrilling near-upset against LSU, followed by a memorable College Gameday matchup against top-ranked USC. Despite the heartbreak that ensued, those experiences remain etched in my memory.
A Pattern of Mediocrity
Unfortunately, ASU’s football team has struggled to find consistency over the years, often finishing with mediocre records and participating in obscure bowl games. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, with occasional 10-win seasons followed by scandals and setbacks. As someone who’s witnessed this pattern for over 17 years, it’s surreal to see the current team achieve what they have.
A New Era of Success
This year’s team, projected to finish last in the conference, has defied expectations and achieved something unprecedented. It’s a testament to the impact of Coach Kenny Dillingham, who has brought a new level of excellence to the program. As a proud Sun Devil, I’m thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion, even if it feels like a dream come true.
A Final Thought
In conclusion, I’ll reiterate my initial advice: attend a large university in a warm climate. It may seem trivial, but trust me, it can have a profound impact on your life. And who knows, you might just find yourself cheering on a championship team like I am today.
