The Resurgence of NHL Enforcers
The National Hockey League is witnessing a revival of the heavyweight era, where each team boasts a formidable player who can throw down at a moment’s notice. These modern-day gladiators, such as Nic Deslauriers, Kurtis MacDermid, and Jonah Gadjovich, command respect from opposing teams. However, not all players fit this mold.
Trent Frederic: The Pretender
Trent Frederic, a Boston Bruins forward, often tries to masquerade as one of these elite enforcers. Despite his attempts to intimidate, he lacks the physical prowess to back up his boasts. A recent fight against Marcus Foligno exposed his limitations.
A Cowardly Display
During a lopsided 6-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets, Frederic saw an opportunity to spark his team. Instead of taking on a formidable opponent, he targeted David Gustafsson, a Swedish rookie playing in only his third game of the season. Frederic’s actions were reminiscent of a bully picking on a weaker opponent. He even threw extra punches after Gustafsson had fallen to the ice.
A Lesson in Leadership
In contrast, Winnipeg Jets captain Adam Lowry, also from St. Louis, demonstrated true leadership. On the next puck drop, he took on a bigger opponent, showcasing the correct way to energize his team. The Jets went on to score two more goals, securing an 8-1 victory.
Frederic’s Hollow Victory
While Frederic may have injured Gustafsson, his actions ultimately proved hollow. His lack of courage and misguided aggression only served to embarrass himself and his team. In a league where true heavyweights roam, Trent Frederic is just a pretender.
