Titanic Excuses: When Cold Weather Becomes a Cop-Out
The NFL season is heating up, but some teams are already making excuses for their lackluster performances. Take the Tennessee Titans, for example. After a dismal showing against the Commanders, defensive back Jarvis Brownlee attributed their slow start to the chilly 40-degree temperature in Landover, Maryland.
Weathering the Storm… or Not
Let’s put this into perspective: the high temperature in Landover on Sunday was 43 degrees, while Nashville, Tennessee, saw a high of 46 degrees. Are we really supposed to believe that a mere 3-degree difference threw the Titans off their game? It’s December 1st, folks! A little cold weather shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Access to Everything, Except Accountability
Brownlee’s excuse is even more laughable when you consider the resources available to NFL teams. From weather reports to warm clothing and hand warmers, there’s no shortage of ways to prepare for and adapt to cold weather. So, what’s the real reason behind the Titans’ poor performance?
Leadership Vacuum
Perhaps the Titans are struggling with leadership and preparation, rather than the weather. Instead of owning up to their mistakes, they’re grasping at straws, blaming the cold for their lack of effort. It’s a sorry excuse, and one that reeks of desperation.
Toughening Up
Meanwhile, the Commanders and 49ers showed no signs of weather-related woes, despite playing in far more challenging conditions. Credit to them for toughing it out and getting the job done.
Rookie Mistake or Gross Excuse?
Brownlee’s comments may be attributed to rookie naivety, but they’re still a gross look for the Titans. When asked about it, head coach Brian Callahan added fuel to the fire, claiming that practice last week was even colder than the game. Come on, coach! You can’t blame the weather for your team’s shortcomings.
Cold Hard Truth
The Titans need to face the music: they’re not the team they used to be. Steve McNair wouldn’t have dreamed of complaining about a little cold weather. It’s time for them to step up, own their mistakes, and stop making excuses. The cold isn’t going away anytime soon, and neither are their opponents.
