The Unspoken Code of College Hoops: Balancing Fun and Respect

The Unwritten Rules of College Basketball

When it comes to college basketball, there’s a fine line between good-natured teasing and crossing the line. Case in point: Rick Pitino’s recent encounter with his son’s team.

Protecting Family, But Not Too Much

It’s understandable that Pitino wanted to shield his son from chants of “Who’s your daddy?” But let’s be real – St. John’s fans were always going to bring it up, especially if they were winning. You can’t blame them for wanting to celebrate something positive, no matter how small.

Tough Love and Character Building

As a father of two, I believe that a little bit of teasing can go a long way in building character. If my kids can’t handle some good-natured jokes, how will they fare in the real world? My own father loves to rub it in when Kentucky loses, and I’m better for it.

Setting Boundaries, Not Silence

If you’re going to try to shut down the chants, you need to bring more than a half-hearted attempt. A simple “hey, stop” isn’t going to cut it – you need to mean business. As any dad knows, there’s a difference between a gentle reminder and a firm scolding.

Let the Games Begin

At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and enjoying the game. So, let the fans have their moment – after all, it’s just a game. And who knows, maybe Pitino’s son will learn to take a joke and come out stronger on the other side.
