The Unappreciated Art of Hockey Skating
When you’re glued to the TV watching NHL games every night, it’s easy to take for granted the incredible skills of players like Connor McDavid. Their ability to glide effortlessly across the ice, dodging opponents with ease, makes it seem like a walk in the park. But let’s not forget – they’re wearing skates with blades attached, navigating a frozen sheet of ice at breakneck speeds.
The Unforgiving Nature of Hockey
Hockey is a unique beast. While other sports may require specific skills, hockey demands a fundamental ability that most people lack: the ability to skate. You can’t just show up on the court and run around in basketball or soccer. In hockey, if you can’t skate, you can’t play. Period.
A Humbling Reminder from Jalen Chatfield
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jalen Chatfield recently provided a hilarious reminder of this fact. Before every game, he takes a quick sprint to the bench, slamming on the brakes to create a mini snowstorm in the tunnel to the locker room. This time, however, he took a tumble, and the resulting footage is still MIA. Whoever is holding onto that clip needs to share it with the world – it’s going to be an all-time classic!
The Game That Almost Got Lost in the Shuffle
Oh, and by the way, there was an actual hockey game played last night. The Flyers managed to tie things up at 4-4 thanks to Travis Konency’s second goal of the night. However, they weren’t too keen on playing extra hockey, especially with a flight to Florida waiting. With 30 seconds left in regulation, Martin Necas delivered the winning goal, giving the Canes the victory. Necas now boasts an impressive 17 points in 7 games – not bad for a guy who was considered offer sheet bait over the summer.
A Silver Lining for the Flyers
While the loss stings, the Flyers can take comfort in Matvei Michkov’s continued growth, as he picked up another point with an assist on the powerplay. The loss also puts them in 32nd place in the league, increasing their chances of snagging another top 3 pick in next summer’s draft. If they can pair that with Michkov and Jett Luchanko, watch out – dynasty mode might be activated.
