Chris Sale’s Hall of Fame Push: Can He Reach Cooperstown?

Reassessing Chris Sale’s Hall of Fame Chances After a Stellar 2024 Season

The Unlikely Turnaround

After a dismal forecast, Chris Sale has proven me wrong with an exceptional 2024 season. His performance has sparked a crucial question: where does he stand in terms of Hall of Fame eligibility? With 138 career wins, Sale still has a way to go, but his impressive strikeout record puts him in striking distance.

A Strikeout King

Sale currently ranks 49th all-time in strikeouts with 2,414. If he can maintain his pace and reach 3,000 strikeouts, he’ll join an elite group of pitchers, all of whom are Hall of Famers (with the notable exception of Curt Schilling). C.C. Sabathia, who is likely to be inducted soon, is part of this group, and Sale can follow in his footsteps.

Overcoming Past Setbacks

While Sale’s recent success is undeniable, it’s essential to acknowledge his struggles in the past. He missed key starts and was unable to pitch in the playoffs for the Braves. His 17-18 record with a 4.16 ERA from 2019-2023 is a significant blot on his resume. However, his remarkable comeback has made it difficult to bet against him.

The Path to Cooperstown

To solidify his Hall of Fame chances, Sale needs to continue performing at a high level. Can he reach 180 wins, a milestone that might be sufficient in today’s era? David Cone’s case serves as a cautionary tale, but times have changed, and 250 wins might be the new benchmark for pitchers.

Comparing Sale to Other Hall of Fame Hopefuls

Mike Trout is likely a lock for the Hall of Fame, and Aaron Judge will join him if he plays one more season. Bryce Harper is close to a lock, while Freddie Freeman, Jose Altuve, Manny Machado, and Mookie Betts are also strong contenders. Giancarlo Stanton’s chances hinge on reaching 500 home runs.

So, Where Does Chris Sale Stand?

While Sale isn’t a Hall of Famer yet, he’s edging closer. If he can deliver another outstanding season or two solid years, he’ll be well on his way to Cooperstown. With 600 strikeouts and 3,000 on the horizon, it’s hard to imagine Sale not eventually joining the Hall of Fame elite.
