SMU Football Suffers Major Setback: Star Tight End RJ Maryland Out for Season with Torn ACL

Mustangs Suffer Significant Loss: RJ Maryland Out for the Season

The Southern Methodist University (SMU) football team has been dealt a major blow with the announcement that tight end RJ Maryland will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. Coach Rhett Lashlee shared the news on Tuesday, stating that Maryland requires surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Injury Details Emerge

Maryland sustained the injury during SMU’s 40-10 victory over Stanford last Saturday. He took a direct hit to his knee and was visibly shaken on the sideline after exiting the injury tent. Lashlee hinted that there may be additional complications, stating that the team is “waiting on specifics.”

Impact on the Mustangs’ Offense

Maryland’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the SMU offense. The talented tight end leads the No. 22 Mustangs in receptions (24), receiving yards (359), and touchdowns (4). His contributions have been instrumental in the team’s 6-1 start to the season.

ACC Play Continues

Despite this setback, SMU remains focused on its conference schedule. The Mustangs are off to a 3-0 start in ACC play in their inaugural season and are set to face Duke on Saturday. The team will need to adapt quickly to Maryland’s absence if they hope to maintain their momentum.

A Tough Road Ahead

The loss of RJ Maryland presents a significant challenge for the SMU Mustangs. However, with a strong team culture and a resilient mindset, they may yet overcome this adversity and continue to thrive in the competitive ACC landscape.
